Smart Blocks has received the Contribution to Sustainability Award for a Community Organisation at this year’s Melbourne Awards, which acknowledge organisations that add to Melbourne’s continual growth and movement towards a smarter and more efficient place to live.

Celebrated for its contribution to the city’s social, economic and sustainable improvement, Smart Blocks is a national initiative focused on improving the energy efficiency of existing apartment buildings, which consume 25% more energy than detached dwellings.

Developed in partnership with City of Melbourne, Strata Community Australia, City of Sydney, Green Strata and Owners Corporation Network of Australia, Smart Blocks works with apartment owners and owners’ corporations reduce this surplus energy.

With nearly a quarter of the population living in strata dwellings, initiatives like Smart Blocks are needed to help residents navigate the complexities of retrofitting old buildings with new power savings technologies.

This year Smart Blocks received the support of City of Melbourne, with the council introducing new solar and lighting rebates to supplement the 2014 campaign.

Working toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2020, City of Melbourne will reimburse half the cost, to the value of $3000, for solar panels and LED lighting upgrades that reduce energy use in the common areas of established city apartment buildings, you can apply for the rebate here.
