Architect and urban planner Dean Landy has released his debut book, Creating Vibrant Communities and, an accompanying app, Tribus.

Written by Landy, a partner of Melbourne based architecture firm ClarkeHopkinsClarke, the book uniquely brings together the voices of more than 35 industry leaders to set out the first holistic process for developing new communities.

“You will see in the book there is a strong unified voice saying the same thing: we need to be designing people-focused places that create healthy, sustainable and liveable communities – what I would call ‘vibrant’ – and we need to be working more collaboratively together in order to achieve it,” Landy says.

The key ambition of Creating Vibrant Communities is to go beyond industry rhetoric and provide practical solutions for delivering communities.

“Creating Vibrant Communities sets out to shift the current industry discourse from what outcomes should be achieved when creating new places, to how people involved in creating new places can work smarter and more collaboratively to achieve them,” Landy says.

It is this intent that led to the development of ‘Tribus’ – a community evolution process set out in the book that provides a fresh way of delivering new communities with benefits for private investors, government and residents alike.

This step-by step process considers the entire evolution of new communities, particularly in growth areas and large infill developments, and is designed to make best practice outcomes implementable and achievable.

Landy was inspired to write Creating Vibrant Communities based on his observations working in the urban planning and design industry. His portfolio spans major urban design and mixed-use projects including Soho Village in Point Cook, Polaris 3083 in Bundoora, and currently, Cloverton, set to become the largest masterplanned community in Victoria.

The content in Creating Vibrant Communities strongly supports the New Urban Agenda developed at Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development. This action-oriented document sets global standards of achievement in sustainable urban development, in light of the growing urban population that is set to double by 2050.

Creating Vibrant Communities is available to in select bookstores nationally and through the official website, http://creatingvibrantcommunities.org/.
