The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is about more than horseracing. It has become a 156-year old social and cultural tradition which, over four days from October to November, captures the attention of the nation. The stakes are high, as one of the richest races – the Emirates Melbourne Cup – offers $6.25 million in prize money, drawing in world-class competitors from around the world. It has come to be one of the most highly-attended and important events on the social calendar in Australia, attended by the great and good from around the country and often from abroad.
