Melbourne City councillor, Arron Wood, said residential apartments consumer more than 25 per cent per person more energy than detached dwellings. Over half the total energy consumption is attributed to common areas such as pools, gym, car parks and hot water systems.
“Over 80 per cent of our residents live in apartments and we have over 1200 apartment buildings in the City of Melbourne” said Wood.
The new initiative is part of the nation Smart Block program, which helps apartment owners reduce their power and energy costs and has seen 63 apartment towers already sign up to the program.
