September 2025 – Kennedy Nolan has been appointed by Abbotsford Convent, Australia’s largest multi-arts precinct, to play a pivotal role in the next chapter of its evolution.
Located just four kilometres north-east of Melbourne’s CBD, the 16-acre site was occupied by one of the largest convents in Victoria through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. It was added to the National Heritage List in 2017 in recognition of its historic and architectural significance and today, is home to a vibrant creative community.
Kennedy Nolan picks-up the mantle from Hassell, which delivered the approved Abbotsford Convent masterplan in 2022, with the intention of better integrating and activating the precinct to deliver on its full potential and social purpose.
Abbotsford Convent CEO Justine Hyde said this “passing of the baton” from one renowned architectural practice to another marked a significant milestone in the Convent’s renewal journey.
“Abbotsford Convent has always been a place where heritage and creativity converge – partnering with Kennedy Nolan ensures that our built and natural environment will continue to inspire and serve the community while respecting the unique character of our beloved precinct,” she said.
Kennedy Nolan Principal Rachel Nolan said the studio was honoured to have been selected to help shape the next chapter of the Convent’s evolution.
“Our partnership with Abbotsford Convent is enormously satisfying to us, bringing together so many elements of intrinsic importance to our practice: First Nations priorities, repair of ecology, growing infrastructure for creative production, inclusivity and placemaking for Melbourne and its many visitors,” she said.
Over the coming six months, Kennedy Nolan will scope and prioritise key projects for development in realising the masterplan’s vision to protect and enhance the precinct for future generations.
